Are Europeans indeed more interested in science than in sport?

Eurobarometer, the European opinion survey organization, just released a new survey on science and technology. This was presented by EurActiv as "lazy researchers to blame for declining EU science optimism" and by the European Commission as “80% of Europeans say they are interested in scientific discoveries and technological developments, compared to 65% interested in sport”.

As is often the case, surveys may be used to support diverging preconceived viewpoints. As a matter of fact, the picture is complex. For example:
The future of science:
Over 70% of Europeans think EU-funded research will become more important in the future.
Science and communication:
57% think scientists should put more effort into communicating about their work
Science and youth:
66% believe governments should do more to raise the interest of young people in scientific issues.
Science and women:
75% think their government should support specific measures to improve women's representation in the scientific professions, while 63% think that, if more women were represented in top research positions, this would improve the way research is conducted.

If you are interested in science and technology, we would very much recommend that you read the survey in extenso.
